T.H. Cowin
In Response To: Re: Tossie Cowin ()

Quite a few prople have been interested in Tossie Cowin's ancestry. His father John jnr was a very well-known farmer at Ballachrink, Onchan. His obituary appears on Frances's website - just do a web-search under T.H.Cowin+draper. John was born in c 1840 at Ballagarey, East Baldwin - he is on the 1852 Census aged 11, three younger brothers living there. John's father was John Wade Cowin, of Ballagarey. John Junior inherited one quarter of that farm from his mother, the rest was unfortunately lost through borrowing on mortgage. JWC built a magnificent barn at BG which was where some of the money was spent - still to be seen at EB. John Wade was heir to half of BG the rest he had purchased [ex. Quiggin]. His father I think was Daniel Cowin. THe farm came to the Cowins through inheritance from the Clagues. Cowins actually of Ballacannell, Lonan & recognised as mainly an old Lonan name. Mrs Elizabeth Simpson, one of the founders of the British Fed. of F.H. Societies, was descended from these people.

I lived at BG in my early 20's - beautiful part of IOM.
