Richard Charnley, (my g-g-g-grandfather) born 1802 on Walney Island did indeed live on Piel Island and was a Pilot and Master Mariner. You can find him listed as living there in the 1841 Census and thereafter in Barrow-in Furness. I can't remember offhand how many children Richard and his wife Eleanor had but it was certainly more than ten. He died about 1872.(see www.freebmd.org). I trace my line to Richard through his son Thomas, born in 1839, also a Master Mariner. The family lived in the Barrow area and there are still many Charnleys in Barrow today. My own grandfather, Edwin, left Barrow to work in the Clydeside shipyards.
