I've just come across your query re Edmondson Charnley so this response may be five years and more too late. My g-g-grandfather, Thomas Charnley born 1839 was a sibling of Edmondson's. The latter get's his name from his mother Eleanor (or Ellen) Edmondson. Eleanor was born in 1809 and Edmondson's father Richard was born in 1802. All were seafarers. Check the English census' of 1841, 51 & 61 for the Barrow-in-Furness, Ulverston and Dalton-in-Furness districts; admin boundaries changed from time to time.
