Dominie is usually applied to a schoolmaster but as you say the context makes this highly unlikely - what was the surrounding context ? - usually such gifts to grandchildren were, if not money, lambs or slightly older sheep - occasionally a pet lamb gets mentioned.
Sometimes books are known by the 1st word of their title but a latin tag in mid 18th C and this context makes this somewhat unlikely.
