It may surprise some but the legal age for marriage in the IOM was only raised to 16 in 1933. In England the Age of Marriage Act 1929 raised the minimum age from 12 for females and 14 for males to 16 for both sexes.
Of course even in earlier days very few people married at such a tender age unless their families were very well off and then arranged marriages might secure family fortunes - some youngsters being betrothed many years before legally being able to marry.
It is not very many years since the age of consent for marriage was lowered from 21 years to 18 (prior to this a growing number of young people usually females took their parents to court over the issue in UK) Certainly in 1958 the age was still 21.
It would be very interesting to know whether anyone has come across any record of a 12 to 14 year old being married in IOM or England in the early 20th century!
