I wasn't attempting to 'steal' or upstage your research - My policy is to fully acknowledge my sources from public domain publications as well as anyone who has given me otherwise unpublished material (unless, as sometimes happens, they ask not to be mentioned).

What I was hoping for was either a reference to the source in MNH from where I would transcribe the material as I have done on many other occasions, or, if a minor correction, the missed or erroneous entries. Obviously my (or others) transcriptions may have errors, especially when working from poor xeroxes off old microfilms but inspection by users often raises queries or adds additional information.

My own thoughts about short-run paper publications are that they add unduly to the cost and I look forward to web-based publishing with a CD-ROM as the archival object - a prime example might be the short run publish on-demand Place names by G. Broderick at some £50 or £100/volume which puts it out of reach of most. For most short-run paper publications it is unlikely that the author could conceivably recoup the research time in receipts, which would better be covered by a grant from MNH direct to the author followed by free publication allowing individuals/libraries to run-off, at their own expense, paper copies thus avoiding the significant profit made by publishers/retailers. .
