As always, I would very much appreciate any additions or corrections to the information below. It is my plan to submit the final Pioneer compilation, with all contributors credited, to the appropriate historical and genealogical libraries.

For sources, please check my first posting of October 10.

With them came Mrs. Watterson's aged parents. ...Mr. Watterson settled on a farm of 80 acres. His first son was the second child born in the Manx settlement. The Watterson family numbered ten sons and a daughter. Three of the former served throughout the Civil War, one losing his live in action, the other two badly wounded." ("The Pioneer Families of Cleveland 1796-1840", Vol. 1, Gertrude van Rensselar Wickham, 1914, p 311-4.)

"It was the custom in the early times to hold religious services in the schoolhouse, as the people had not then built a regular place of worship. One evening services were being held in what is now know as the beehive. Mrs. Ann Waterson happened to sit facing her own house in which three of her children were sleeping. Suddenly she saw flames bursting through the roof. She was so terrified that she could not speak, but springing to her feet and pointing toward the house, she gasped, "Oh! Oh! Oh!" and then sank down again. The minister was surprised but a moment later he was dumbfounded to see the whole congregation rush pellmell out of the house without waiting for the doxology or the benediction. The children were saved but the house was consumed. Again the men turned out as they did when the Hubbell house was burned and in two or three days they had a new and better house than the one that was destroyed."
