Warrensville Pioneers: Three Caine families

As always, I would very much appreciate any additions or corrections to the information below. It is my plan to submit the final Pioneer compilation, with all contributors credited, to the appropriate historical and genealogical libraries.

For sources, please check my first posting of October 10.

(1) Thomas Caine was born about 1775, and died August 18, 1868, age 82. He married, at Lezayre, January 29, 1804, Jane Stephens (Stevenson ?).

Thomas and Jane Caine immigrated in 1832. They lived in Warrensville.

IS CATHERINE CAIN (MRS ROBERT COWLEY) 1832 CLEVELAND PART OF THIS FAMILY? They married, February 20, 1836.

1850 Cleveland 1st ward census #502: Robert Cowley 36 ship carpenter IOM; Catharine 36 IOM; Mary 13 Ohio; robert 11 Ohio; Wm 8 Ohio; Henry 5 Ohio; Thomas 2 Ohio; Harriet 6/12 Ohio; Jane 79 IOM.

i. Jane Cain was baptized March 1, 1805. (died young?)

ii. Patrick Cain was baptized April 10, 1808. Is he the Patrick Cain who married,March 13, 1841, Margaret Quayle?

iii. Mary Cain was baptized February 27, 1811. Mary Cain, immigrated 1832, mentioned by Tim Davis.

iv. Margaret Cain was baptized September 15, 1816. Margaret married, May 21, 1842, Edward Mathews. She died in Warrensville, November 21, 1883, age 67, "Margaret wife of Edward Mathews". Edward Mathews died January 1, 1894, age 77. Buried Woodland Cemetery.

1850 Cleveland census 2nd ward: Edward Matthews 33 IOM; Margaret 33 IOM; William 7 Ohio; Thomas 5 Ohio.

1880 Summit County, Akron, census 6th ward p. 124B: Edward Mathews 64 Eng farmer Eng/Eng; Margaret 63 IOM/IOM/IOM; Dorothy Armitage W 40 eng housekeeping Eng/eng; Cora Armitage 13 Ohio at school; George Armitage 17 Ohio stone mason.

+ v. Thomas Cain was baptized April 18, 1819, and died February 2, 1903, age 83, at his residence in Warrensville. Thomas Cain married, January 31, 1847, Jane Kerruish (indexed as "Karnish"). Jane was the daughter of William and Jane (Kelly) Kerruish, b. IOM about 1825.

vi. Daniel Cain was baptized January 30, 1821.

vii. Jane Cain was baptized January 12, 1822. Jane Cain married first, William Kelly. William Kelley died December 9, 1863, age 63. Buried Woodland Cemetery.

1860 Orange Township census #1244-1261: Wm Kelley 60 farmer IOM; Jane 48 IOM; Lewis 4 Ohio.

Jane married second, December 12, 1869, Starks Edwards.

1870 census

Jane was widowed by the 1880 census.

1880 Warrensville census: Jane Edwards W 52 IOM; Linse (sic) Kelly 24 at school Ohio; Charles Leems 8 Ohio at school.

"Mrs. Jane Edwards, formerly Mrs. Jane Kelly late of Warrensville, died March 4, 1907 age 84. Funeral from the residence of her son L. A. Kelly, 2179 E 87th St (old No. 25 Vienna St.)]

viii. Philip Cain was baptized March 24, 1825.

ix. Elinor Cain was baptized May 24, 1827.

Thomas Cain (Thomas Cain-Jane Stephens) was baptized April 18, 1819, and died February 2, 1903, age 83, at his residence in Warrensville. Thomas Cain married, January 31, 1847, Jane Kerruish (indexed as "Karnish"), daughter of William and Jane (Kelly) Kerruish, born IOM, about 1825. Jane J. Cain, widow of the late Thomas Cain and sister of W. S. Kerruish, died November 12, 1905, in her 81st year. Funeral from Mars Hill Methodist Church.

Jane Kerruish immigrated with her parents, going first to Rockport (now Lakewood) in 1827, and to Warrensville in 1829.

1870 Warrensville census #222: Thomas Caine 51 farmer IOM; Jane 45 IOM; Sarah 11 Ohio; Newell 14 Ohio; Jane Kerrush 76 IOM.

1880 Warrensville census p. 371B: Thomas Cain 61 IOM; Jane J. Cain 55 IOM; Nule Worden 24 Ohio; Alles Quinn 17 Ohio.

Children of Jane Kerruish and Thomas Cain:

Newell Cain (?)

Sarah Cain born about 1859, and died January 21, 1890, age 35 years. Formerly of Euclid, Ohio. Funeral from the residence of L. A. Kelly, 25 Vienna St.

(2) William S. Caine was born about 1791. He married Margaret _____. She was born about 1790.

William and Margaret Caine lived in Warrensville.

1850 Warrensville census #3153: Wm S. Caine 59 farmer IOM; Margaret 60 IOM; Wm 30 IOM; Morrison 19 Vermont.

1860 Warrensville census #90: Wm S. Cain 69 farmer IOM: Margaret 71 IOM; William 44 IOM.

Children of Margaret _____ and William S. Caine: almost certainly others

i. William Caine was born on the Isle of Man about 1820.

ii. Morrison Caine was born in Vermont about 1831. He married, October 8, 1851, Eliza J. Lee.

1880 Urbana (Champaign County) Illinois census p. 418D: Morrison Caine 45 Vermont teamster IOM/IOM; Emma Cain 8 Illinois/Vt/Eng; Clara M. Caine 4 NY/NY/NY.

Mrs. William S. Caine Mary S. Boyd 1838 Warrensville St. Albans, Vermont (tcd)

Mrs. Joseph McFadden Ann L. Cain 1838 Cleveland St. Albans, Vermont (tcd) married Cleveland April 5, 1850. Ann L. McFadden died August 1, 1855, "wife of Joseph B. McFadden" Funeral at residence of Oscar Welsh, Columbus St.

Mrs. Oscar F. Welch Eliza Cain 1838 Cleveland St Albans, Vermont (tcd) m. December 27, 1843. Oscar F. Welch died December 23, 1892, age 75. Eliza Welch, wife of O. F. Welch died August 4, 1889.

?? Mrs. Thomas Caine - Margaret Quiggen 1838 Pierpont (tcd) m. June 12, 1838 Douglas. Thomas born June 12, 1813, died October 31, 1892.

(3) William H. Caine (William Caine- ) was born about 1800, and died in Warrensville December 7, 1863, age 63. He married Margaret _____. She was born about 1810, and died in Warrensville, August 20, 1862, age 54.

William and Margart Caine lived in Warrensville.

Children of Margaret _____ and William H. Caine: born in Ohio

i. Mary Ann Caine was born about 1831.

ii. John Caine was born about 1833.

iii. James Caine was born about 1837.

iv. George Caine was born about 1839. He may be the George Cain who died November 7, 1909, age 69 yr. Funeral from his residence 1296 Brockley ave, Lakewood. Buried Riverside. Mrs. George Cain (obit March 13, 1904) age 52, funeral from residence Brockley St. Lakewood.

vi. Charlotte Caine was born about 1840. Charlotte Caine Gawne, wife of William Gawne, died July 5, 1905 in her 63rd year. William Gawne died September 23, 1913, age 73. Buried Woodland Cemetery.

vii. Matilda Caine was born about 1844.

viii. Albert Caine was born about 1847.

ix. Almira Caine was born about 1851.
