Warrensville Pioneers: Callow, Corkill, Cowin

As always, I would very much appreciate any additions or corrections to the information below. It is my hope to submit the final Pioneer compilation, with all contributors credited, to the appropriate historical and genealogical libraries.

William Callow, Edward Corkill, Mary Callow, and Margaret Cowin are all children of William and Margaret (Kelly) Callow of Lonan, below.

William Callow was born about 1774-76, in the Isle of Man, and was buried at Lonan, November 4, 1842, age 67. He married, at Lonan, Isle of Man, August 18, 1804, Margaret Kelly. According to the census, she was born about 1782- 1786. She is said to be the daughter of James Kelly of Baljean, Lonan, and his second wife, Eleanor _____. Margaret Callow apparently died in the Warrensville, Ohio, area between 1850 and 1860 (when she is not found in the census). Neither her death nor her burial has been located. Unfortunately, Cuyahoga County death records begin in 1867.

William Callow, a lead miner and farmer, lived at Largen/Laggan, Agneash, Lonan. He and his cousin, Thomas Kelly, purchased this property on February 19, 1808. William Callow and his wife Margaret Callow, nee Kelly, settled half of their share of the Laggan on their eldest son William in November 1836. William, Jr., was to become entitled to the full share following the deaths of William and Margaret.

In 1849, Thomas Kelly, Jr., Margaret Callow's nephew, along with his cousins James Callow, Edward (Jane Callow) Corkill, Mary Callow, and Thomas (Margaret Callow) Cowin, immigrated to Ohio, arriving in New York on the ship Aberdeen, May 23, 1849. [Edward Corkill; Jane; William; Jane; Margaret; Edward 6; Anne 5; Catherine infant; Thos Cowin 40; Margaret 40; Anne 11; Sophia 9; John 7; William 5; Edward 3; Thomas infant; James Callow 24; Mary Callow 22; Thomas Kelly 20; Jane 24]

On 31st October 1849, Margaret Callow, widow, of the Laggan, sold a house and garden at Glendrink, Lonan. On March 7, 1850, William Callow and his wife Isabella, and William's widowed mother Margaret, sold their share of the Laggan to James Kelly (the eldest son of Thomas Kelly) for £210...

Probably the money from the property sales financed the Callow family's emigration to Ohio. Margaret Callow emigrated to the United States, with her son William and his family, in 1850, arriving in New York from Liverpool on the ship West Point, May 20, 1850. [William Callow 43, farmer; Isabella 38; Mary 11; William 10; Eliza 8; Ann 6; John 3; James infant; Margaret 60; Margaret Kerruish 56. Ship manifest #405, FHL film 0175444. The relationship of Margaret Kerruish to this family is not known, but she was with the family of William and Isabella (Callow) Callow in Lonan in 1841, listed as a servant. Descendants of Thomas Kelly in Wisconsin remember an "Aunty Kerruish" in their family. Probably this is she.]

"The West Point was a ship-rigged sailing vessel; meaning she had three masts and her sails were square-rigged.... [She] was a packet ship, sailing the New York-Liverpool route for the Red Star Line.

Margaret Callow is found in the 1850 Warrensville, Ohio, census, in a household headed by John Kelly, age 60. (John Kelly's relationship to the family has not been determined.) Granddaughter Jane Corkill is also a member of this household.

1850 census 1st Ward, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Household #17: Hugh Lord 41, shoemaker, born IOM; Ann 34, born IOM; Mary Callow 24, born IOM; Caius Lord 9, born Ohio; Hugh Lord 2, born Ohio; William Caine 27, shoemaker, born IOM. FHL film 0020222. See "Lord Family", posted Oct 9.
