I think sometimes you need to know what you are looking for, for instance my gggrandmother, Ancelline, was Analine in the 1881, and Victorine in the 1901. On top of that, had variations of Aline and Ellen in various English documents, which I have seen photocopies of, so it is obvious what her pet name was.
