Thanks for the response. I am reasonably sure that Jane's maiden name was Radcliffe (one of her grandchildren has that as a middle name. She probably married John Gawne in the States and returned (after John died?). When I saw
Jane Gawne on the 1881 census I wondered if it could be the same person, but I didn't know what "B Cross" was.
