MCLEAVEY-CORKILL-WATTERSON

I have in my possession a copy of a certificate awarded to my great-grandad by the Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society 10th January 1901.

It states: The thanks of the committee be presented (with 25/-) to Richard James McLeavey, King Street, Ramsey, Isle of Man, for gallantly jumping into the River Mersey at the Princes Landing Stage and rescuing a man attempting suicide on December 29th 1900.

I also have a copy of the Liverpool Echo of the time recording the event.

Can anyone please help me with more information on my great-grandad? He was born 1873, I think in Maughold. He was adopted and believed to have been born with the surname Sloane (I am not sure of the spelling here). He married Alma Florence Corkill born 1881, they started their married life in 30 King Street, Ramsey, where my grandad Thomas McLeavey was born, they then lived for a time at 29 Athol Street, Douglas. I believe Richard James McLeavey was stationed at Knockaloe Army Camp during the 1914/18 war and was possibly a Sergeant Major.

Alma Florence Corkill's parents were John Corkill born 1849 and Margaret Watterson born 1848. John and Margaret married at Maughold 30 April 1870. John was a blacksmith and lived at the following three addresses:

5 Looneys Court, Ramsey 1871
10 Queen Street, Ramsey 1881
12 Bark Lane, Ramsey 1894

Richard James McLeavey and his wife Alma Florence where both buried in Maughold Cemetery. They both attended St Marys Church, Douglas.

Any information will be gratefully received. Thanks.
