If his father was a printer then the years 1838-48 saw many printers come to the Island (see http://www.ee.surrey.ac.uk/Contrib/manx/famhist/genealgy/press.htm for some background) - I have seen estimates of '1000 printers' in Douglas but this seems grossly too high. The industry collapsed in 1848 with withdrawl of postage rights and moved back to UK
